In the late 1990s about 2,800 "S.14 packages" containing radioactive waste were deposited at the SKB final repository in Forsmark. Of these, 1,074 were packaged by Studsvik Nuclear AB, while the remainder had already been packaged when the Studsvik facility was still owned by the Swedish State.
When the Studsvik facility was privatized, AB SVAFO was established, under the ownership of the nuclear power companies, to manage older waste and some facilities. During the 2000s, SVAFO carried out measurements and conducted a review of documentation for those of its S.14 packages that are still stored at the Studsvik site. These analyses have shown that some packages may contain substances in larger quantities than is allowed in the final repository in question. This has resulted in a discussion that all S.14 packages deposited at Forsmark should be retrieved.
"In recent years we have reviewed the documentation and procedures used when the waste was packaged without finding any indications that these packages may be faulty. Given the information we have today, the 1,074 packages packaged by us were handled correctly, which means that we have no liability for costs in connection with retrieval of these packages," says Camilla Hoflund, President and CEO of Studsvik.
